If you ask me, the best way to recharge is by the water — and here in Nova Scotia, we’re spoiled with some of the most beautiful coastlines, lakes, and cottage country anywhere in Canada. Whether you’re dreaming of a weekend escape or looking for a vacation property to call your own, these are a few of my favourite spots to unwind.

1. Hubbards & St. Margaret’s Bay

This area is a personal favourite — and for good reason. Just 25 minutes from Halifax, St. Margaret’s Bay offers a beautiful mix of ocean and lake life. It’s close enough for a quick getaway, but far enough to feel like you’ve truly escaped the city buzz.

Charming seaside communities like Hubbards are home to bustling farmers’ markets, quiet beaches, and cozy cafes. It’s also a great place to paddle, sail, or simply watch the boats from shore.

2. Chester & Mahone Bay

Colourful, historic, and full of small-town charm — these South Shore gems are perfect for those who love to wander artisan shops, enjoy dockside dining, and soak in postcard-worthy views. The surrounding area is also ideal for anyone considering a vacation rental, thanks to strong visitor appeal and a steady tourist season.

3. Abby’s Beach House — My Go-To Getaway

Yes I may be biased, but of all the places I’ve stayed, Abby’s Beach House stands out as a true haven. Tucked along the picturesque Lighthouse Route on St. Margaret’s Bay, this cottage offers the perfect balance of comfort, privacy, and stunning views.

Here’s why you need to come here:

  • Unbeatable views: From the big living room windows and wraparound deck, you can watch the bay, ocean, harbour, and sky shift all day long.
  • Cozy, well-stocked comfort: An open-concept kitchen and living area with nautical decor, a fireplace for cool nights, and thoughtful touches like a Nespresso machine, books, and board games.
  • Outdoor perks: A private hot tub (year-round!), fire pit, hammock, BBQ, kayak, and plenty of space to roam on over an acre of land.
  • Family-friendly: Crib, kids’ books, toys, and all the essentials for a comfortable stay with little ones.
